Take Your Politicians to Bike Day

Last Tuesday morning I was up in Appleton to participate in a bicycle roundtable with Congressman Reid Ribble. Congressman Ribble represents Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District and is a member, along with Congressman Tom Petri, of the House’s Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

The roundtable was organized by Rob Gusky, Kimberly-Clark’s Ambassador of Cycling, and brought together representatives from various Fox Cities businesses and organizations to share the great value and importance of bicycling. Those represented included Lawrence University, Appleton Bike Shop, Kimberly-Clark, Oshkosh Corporation, Faith Technologies, Galloway Companies, Fox Cities Greenways, Wheel & Sprocket, Affinity Health, Miller Electric, the YMCA, and the City of Appleton.

We’re in a representative democracy and it’s crucial that our political leaders hear the positive and important impacts that Wisconsin bicycling delivers. The event was the perfect opportunity to share the great value of bicycling with an important congressional leader.

After the roundtable we of course went out for a ride!

Ready to Ride

Tuesday’s event was simple, strait forward, and effective. It would be great if more people would arrange events like this in communities across the state. We can not expect our members of Congress, our state legislators, our county leaders, our mayors and our city council members to care about bicycling if we don’t tell them directly how much we care. And while meetings are great, what better way to punctuate the point than with a bike ride. The fall colors are peaking now, and the cool weather is perfect for a short bike ride.

Please let me know if the Bike Fed can provide any help arranging an event in your community.

Ride On
