With the success and enthusiasm we have seen in Wisconsin and across the nation with International Walk to School Day, we have decided to select a day in the winter to promote walking to school year-round. Wednesday, February 5th, 2014 has been selected as the 1st Winter Walk to School Day in Wisconsin. We hope to encourage schools and communities to plan events that will promote walking to/from school safely and demonstrate that walking can be fun throughout the year, even during the Wisconsin winters.
Track your activity online to win $200 for your school!
Use wi.fireupyourfeet.org to track physical activity for the week of Feb 2nd through 8th. Click on the “Winter Activity Challenge Signup” on the top left. The Wisconsin school with most participants tracking at least one activity during this time period will win $200 to help support healthy and active school initiatives! If you signed up during the Fall Challenge just log in to your account and record your activity that week. New participants are also encouraged to sign up to help your school win the grand prize!
Here are a few tips to keep your family safe while walking:
· Always use sidewalks or paths where available.
· Wear bright colored or reflective clothing which makes you more visible to drivers.
· Always use marked crosswalks and crossing guards when possible.
· Be sure to wear appropriate clothing (hats, gloves, winter boots etc.) when walking in cold weather.
