Guest Post:Visitors from Up North

Another wonderful guest post from d’Andre Willis.  If you have an idea for a post on Over the Bars, send it to me and I will consider putting it up.  Just email the story and photos to overthebarsmke(at)  I am particularly interested in guest posts from the female perspective.  I know how important this perspective is, and how rarely we hear it in the cycling world.  And no matter how hard I try, I just don’t quite get it well enough to express it. I’m sure my wife and daughter would second that.

It’s been about a month since the first of the birds from “up north” arrived in the Milwaukee Harbor.  They like colder water, so that tells you what time of year it is.   The first ones on the scene, as usual, are the coots.   The scaup haven’t arrived yet, and neither have the mergansers, but they’ll be here soon.

Dave mentioned a couple of weeks ago how nice it is to ride in the fall because it’s cool enough to wear your regular work clothes and not work up a sweat yet warm enough to not need a coat.   It may be that we’re leaving that pleasant state and heading toward jacket weather, but it’s still awfully nice to be out on a bike.

Tonight I saw a number of women biking home who seemed to agree…..fall is the best time to ride a bike.    When the mergansers arrive we can talk about hats, but until then a jacket and a pair of gloves are perfect.
