If the sub-zero temperatures and snow didn’t tip you off, I thought I would let you know that Bike Winter is officially here in Wisconsin. Up in my neck of the woods, the entire population of La Crosse is preparing for a second season of Bike Winter activities designed around bringing cyclists together to celebrate riding through the winter. Thanks to the generosity of area businesses, we already have a bunch of fun activities planned to help keep people pedaling through the cold with a smile.
This year’s events will begin with on Sunday, February 10th with an urban bike ride, starting at the La Crosse Visitors Bureau. The ride will take in some of the best views from the city’s bike trails and continue at a casual pace with stops along the way for food and beverages.
Wednesday, February 13th, cyclists can pedal to the Pearl Street Brewery for a free pint and basic winter maintenance tips to keep your bike rolling through the winter.
Friday, February 15th, ride to the Wine Guyz for a Bike Winter party after work. There will be free appetizers for the party between 4:30 -6:30. Last winter’s party was so well attended, we decided to return to the same venue and give bicyclists a chance to gather after work and enjoy some great conversation in a beautiful spot.
Sunday, February 17th, bicyclists will gather at Earl’s Grocery and Saloon for a Fashion Social. Come share your ideas about what keeps you warm as you continue to ride through the winter season. In this casual atmosphere, we can enjoy beer, peanuts, and pizza as we share clothing choices for winter riding. Click here to see a list of the events.
Saturday, February 23rd, make sure you leave room in your schedule for the First Annual La Crosse Bike Swap. $5 to sell a bike, $3 at the door. Vendor tables available. Register now for a Promotional Special Rate. Click here to register and reserve a vendor table.
While we would love to have you visit the Crescent City to join us in our Bike Winter activities, winter is not an amenity exclusive to La Crosse. I happen to know that there are fun things to do on a bike in some other Wisconsin cities.
If you live in the Dane County area, you can find out about bike winter events here on the Madison Bike Winter Facebook.
For those who live in that big city by the big lake, look to the Milwaukee Bike Winter Facebook page for fun stuff to do on two wheels in the cold. Don’t miss their annual “Sew to be Seen” hi-vis sewing party this Sunday, Jan. 27th, at Truly Spoken Cycles in the always cosmopolitan Riverwest Neighborhood.
And of course everyone should be coming to the Bike Fed’s Winter Carnival at Ray’s Indoor Mountain Bike Park. Even if you don’t like hucking, or even know what hucking is, you should come to Rays as they have courses for riders of all abilities and interests. You should definitely bring your kids! For those purists who only ride outside, come on down for the food, beverages, raffles, games and fun!
