Interim leader announced

Dave and his beloved “Pale Primrose” custom Waterford 1900 on one of their many adventures together.

Last week the Bike Fed’s Executive Director Kevin Hardman announced to you that he will be starting a new job at Midwest Bikeshare on July 8th. We all wish Kevin well in his new career and are glad he will remain a part of our Wisconsin cycling community. While we will miss him, Kevin leaves the Bike Fed with stable finances and a talented staff. Those staff members will continue to run the great programing they are known for and keep the Bike Fed moving forward. To help ensure all the administrative needs are met, the Board of Directors has asked long-time staff member Dave Schlabowske to fill in as interim Executive Director until a permanent replacement is hired.

As Communications Director for the last two years, many of you already know Dave as the voice of the Bike Fed. You may not know that eleven years ago he opened the Milwaukee office for the Bike Fed. Dave was hired with a $30,000 grant and worked out of another organization’s shared office. Five years later when he left to become the City of Milwaukee’s first bicycle coordinator, the budget had grown by a factor of 10, the Bike Fed had a new, sustainably designed office, and a staff of four full-time and several part time employees. Based on his experience, the Board of Directors is confident in Dave’s ability to lead the Bike Fed until we have a permanent Executive Director in place.

Brien Christopherson

To that end, the Board will be working with select staff members to craft a job description and likely engage a professional recruiter to help us find the next great leader of our organization. The Bike Fed is the largest statewide bicycle advocacy organization in the country, and a great place to work. As such, we are confident in our ability to attract top-level talent from around the country as well as locally. That process could take several months, but in the meantime, the excellent staff at the Bike Fed will keep their programs running and Dave will oversee all administrative details.

About Brien Christopherson, Chair of the Board of Directors

Brien is an avid commuter and bicycle racer, and is usually willing to ride just about anywhere on a bike. He races road and cyclocross for Team Wisconsin and serves on the Board of the team as Treasurer. He also has experience with a range of other non-profit organizations serving in grant giving, treasury and financial management positions. When not on a bike Brien works as the Director of Corporate Development for Milwaukee based Rexnord Corporation where he is responsible for Mergers and Acquisitions. He lives in Wauwatosa with his wife and two sons. He is also a proud member of the Tosa Spokesman whose motto is “All Weather is Good Weather”!
