Women & Bicycles Rolls Out a New Season

After a mild winter, it is time to get back on the road. The Wisconsin Bike Fed is ready to Roll out the 2016 Women & Bicycles season.

The Alliance for Bicycling and Walking 2016 Benchmark reported Wisconsin ranks 13th,with 0.8% of bicycle commuters; 30% of bike commuters are women. In an effort to address this disparity, the Wisconsin Bike Fed launched our Women & Bicycles program in 2014, modeled after the successful Washington D.C.program. Our goal is to work toward an equitable distribution of bicycle commuters in Wisconsin, by showing women how to make bicycling comfortable, convenient and accessible. Our program centers around  the expertise and enthusiasm of women riders who have agreed to share their passion of bicycling to support friends, neighbors and anyone they can entice to experience the freedom, excitement and the empowerment that comes with bicycling. We hope to encourage women to ride as well as become become leaders and advocates in communities all across Wisconsin.

Women & Bicycles gains momentum from “Roll Models” across  Wisconsin communities  who volunteer their time to create networks that come together to socialize, share information, and ride bicycles. Each group consists of women with a variety of levels of experience and interests that range from beginning to explore, commuting, touring, racing, mountain biking, and riding year round. We can all learn something new from someone.

The first season began with six Roll Models who created 62 adventures  for 558 women.  In the second season, we expanded to eight cities including: Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, St. Croix Valley, La Crosse, Jefferson, and Cedarburg.  The dedication of ten Roll Models offered 87 events including social gatherings, workshops and a variety of rides for a the benefit of 923 women.

This season we are rolling out a t-shirt for our program.  They are available for everyone because we think all women who ride bikes are Roll Models and will inspire other women to join the fun.  These t-shirts  would make a great Mother’s Day present! They are available here.
