Bike Fed Wins $35,800 in Heart of Canal Street Drawing!

Thanks to everyone from Potowatomi Hotel and Casino for the generous donation. Everyone here is pictured next to our south side mobile bike repair trike. Jean Carlo Aleman, bottom right, is of of our returning mechanics in the program.

We are very happy to announce that we were one of the 31 recipients of the Potawatomi Hotel and Casino’s Heart of Canal Street Charity program! The $35,821 will be used to fund our Youth Adventure Bike Summer Camps and our Mobile Bike Repair Program here in Milwaukee. Youth Adventure Bike Camps provide a chance for kids in our community to learn safe biking skills and apply that knowledge immediately on rides to destinations around the city from their school including Lake Michigan, our wonderful county parks system, and other interesting sites.

Our Mobile Repair program provides free repair services in bike shop desert areas on Milwaukee’s near South Side and near North Side. The program is staffed by high school students, who learn bicycle repair and gain job readiness skills by preparing resumes, participating in job interviews and gaining valuable job experience with our summer employment fixing bikes in the communities where they live. Providing youth a chance to learn hands on job skills while being of service to their community is a key to making our city a better place to live, work and ride a bike.

We’d like to thank Potawatomi Hotel and Casino for their support. This generous donation will allow us to expand our program and make a real difference in our community and in the lives of the youth in our program.
