Educational Programs Instructor – Dane County

The Bike Fed is seeking a part-time, hourly Education Programs Instructor to work in the Madison area. The Education Programs Instructor reports to the Dane County Programs Manager. The ideal candidate exercises sound judgment and thrives in diverse work environments. They are enthusiastic about promoting active transportation and possess excellent communication skills. They are also organized, punctual, outgoing, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.

Rate: $20/hr, part time, up to 40 hours during the summer. Hours range from 15-40 depending on season. Potential for full time hours in 2025.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Lead and assist instruction in bike and pedestrian safety education at summer bike camps and in classroom settings.
  • Provide a safe and welcoming learning atmosphere for youth.
  • Assist at community events and classes.
  • Assist Program Manager on High School Safe Routes to School programming
  • Lead and assist the Bike Corral at UW-Madison home football games
  • Assist with other projects and tasks with Bike Fed as needed.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Excellent speaking and presentation skills
  • Experience working with children/teens in an educational setting 
  • Ability to work with diverse communities
  • Positive attitude and ability to adapt to changing situations
  • Enjoy bicycling and active transportation
  • Must pass a background check for interacting with youth 

Beneficial knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Spanish Fluency. 
  • Driver’s License and ability to drive a 10’-26’ moving truck.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification. 
  • Bicycle maintenance/mechanic skills. 
  • Social Media/Computer graphic skills. 

Job conditions/work locations

  • Most time is spent outside on playgrounds and on the street teaching bicycle safety
  • Some time is spent inside classrooms teaching pedestrian and bicycle safety
  • Sites are located in Madison as well as broader Dane County
  • The majority of working hours will occur M-F with some evenings and weekends for Bike Fed events and programming. 
  • Hybrid work office options

Physical requirements

  • Must be able to ride a bicycle 10-30+  miles/day to and for work.
  • Lift and move bicycles, boxes of helmets, and equipment between sites.  50+ lbs
