Template for Testimony in Support of Senate Bill 375
Senate Committee on Transportation and Local Government
[Opening]
Thank you, Chairman Tomczyk, Vice-Chair Hutton, and members of the Committee on Transportation and Local Government for holding a public hearing on Senate Bill 375, which would authorize the City of Milwaukee to implement a traffic safety camera (TSC) pilot program.
[Introduction]
State your name, organization and/or background to establish yourself as a stakeholder. Be brief, but share information about yourself that is relevant to this issue. For example, you could have a background in Emergency Medical Services (EMS), work/volunteer for a local nonprofit, or even just live or recreate in the City of Milwaukee.
[Personal Story or Experience (Optional)]
If you have a personal experience, include it here in 3–5 sentences. Keep it succinct and tactful. Then connect your story back to why SB 375 matters. Example: “I have seen firsthand how dangerous speeding and reckless driving can be when responding to crashes. These experiences have shown me the urgent need for stronger traffic safety measures in Milwaukee.”
[Why a TSC Program is Needed in Milwaukee]
We know that too many drivers are speeding, running red lights, and causing injuries or fatalities in Milwaukee. The City of Milwaukee experiences far higher rates of traffic-related injuries and fatalities than the rest of Wisconsin. In 2024 alone, there were 164 traffic crash fatalities statewide, and nearly half of them were in Milwaukee, where 74 lives were lost.
[How TSC Programs Are Effective]
Senate Bill 375 would give Milwaukee an effective tool to address the reckless driving crisis and save lives. Traffic safety camera programs have been proven nationwide to significantly reduce dangerous driving behaviors and are already in use in 29 other states. They are especially effective in urban areas, where they have reduced injury crashes by as much as 47 percent. It is time to authorize the use of traffic safety cameras in Milwaukee and allow the city to pilot this lifesaving program.
[Closing]
Thank you again, Chairman Tomczyk, Vice-Chair Hutton, and members of the committee for holding this public hearing on SB 375 and allowing me the opportunity to share my support for this important legislation.
Sincerely,
[NAME, ADVOCACY ORG, ADDRESS]
