Smith’s Bike Shop Celebrates 10 Years of Community, Cycling, and Connection

That commitment is at the heart of Smith’s Bike Shop as owners Erik and Randi Pueschner celebrate their 10th anniversary of ownership in 2026. For many in the Coulee Region, Smith’s is more than a place to buy a bicycle or have a repair completed. It is a gathering place, a trusted resource, and a hub for the local cycling community.

Erik’s connection to Smith’s began in 1996 when he moved to La Crosse and joined what was then Smith’s Cycle and Fitness. A few years later, he became the shop manager, helping generations of riders discover the area’s scenic roads, challenging bluffs, and welcoming cycling culture. In 2016, Erik and his wife, Randi, purchased the business and renamed it Smith’s Bike Shop, continuing a legacy that dates back to 1895.

Over the past decade, the couple has worked to strengthen not only the business, but also the cycling community that surrounds it. From group rides and advocacy efforts to educational events and charitable partnerships, Smith’s has become a catalyst for getting more people on bikes and connected with one another.

“Cycling has always been about community,” says Erik. “Some of the best friendships start on a bike ride.”

For Randi, the sense of community extends far beyond organized rides and cycling events.

“When someone buys a bike from Smith’s, they’re not just making a purchase, they’re joining a family,” she says. “We love seeing customers come back year after year, bringing in their kids, introducing us to friends, and sharing stories from their adventures. Those relationships are what make this place special.”

That family atmosphere starts with the people who walk through the shop doors every day. While Erik and Randi may own the business, they are quick to credit the dedicated staff members who keep Smith’s running smoothly.

“Our employees are the glue that holds everything together,” Randi says. “They build relationships with customers, solve problems, share their expertise, and create the welcoming environment people have come to expect from Smith’s. We simply couldn’t do what we do without them.”

That spirit was on full display during Smith’s 130th Anniversary celebration last year. Riders from across the region gathered to enjoy thoughtfully designed routes, well-stocked rest stops, and the camaraderie that has become synonymous with Smith’s events. The overwhelming response inspired the shop to bring back one of its most memorable challenges for 2026: the legendary 10×100 ride.

On Saturday, July 25th riders are in for a treat. The 10×100 is a true Coulee Region experience, featuring 100 miles of riding, 10 bluff climbs, and more than 7,000 feet of elevation gain. Along the way, participants will be treated to some of the area’s most spectacular views while enjoying multiple rest stops, support services, and the encouragement of fellow riders. Mechanical support will be available throughout the day, allowing participants to focus on the adventure rather than their equipment.

For riders seeking a slightly less demanding challenge, the event will also feature a 5×50 route, offering five bluff climbs over 50 miles. Families and casual riders can join in the celebration as well with a fun community ride around La Crosse that includes treats and surprises along the route. After the popularity of last year’s ice cream stop, organizers hint that it may make a return appearance.

The anniversary rides represent more than a cycling event. They reflect what Smith’s Bike Shop has become over the last decade: a place where people gather, challenge themselves, support one another, and celebrate the unique outdoor lifestyle that makes the Coulee Region special.

As Smith’s Bike Shop looks ahead to its next chapter, the focus remains the same as it was 10 years ago, and, in many ways, more than 130 years ago. Build community. Welcome riders of all abilities. Support one another. And help people create lasting memories on two wheels.
