During a seminar in Milwaukee held September 26-28, 2025, eight new League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) and two LCI Coaches earned their wheels (figuratively speaking) and were blessed by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) to teach a collection of bicycling safety courses to bike riders in their communities. This now bring current Bike Fed staff LCI count to 13!

Who are the new LCIs and LCI Coaches?

The newest LCI Coaches are long time Bike Fed staffers, Michael Anderson and Jake Newborn. They undertook the challenge of becoming League of American Bicyclists “Organizational Coaches” to continue to grow the Bike Fed’s education programs and support educational offerings statewide.

” We are proud and honored to join the national network of LAB Coaches, and acting as the local Wisconsin resources to continue to grow the network of dedicated and knowledgeable cycling education champions across the state. Thank you to the League and all the coaches we trained with for this guidance and support over the past year on this journey”

The latest batch of LCIs include: Shawn Koval (Madison), Nicolas Dobbs (Milwaukee), Eric Arriola (Milwaukee), Christy Hoff (Kenosha) , Brian Gleichauf (Racine), Christina Frain (Milwaukee), Steven Hunter (Milwaukee), and Joe Arnold (Milwaukee). Having successfully demonstrated teaching techniques and bike riding skills, the newly minted LCIs are able to teach the League of American Bicyclists’ Smart Cycling course and a variety of other bike safety and skills classes.

And the LCIs and LCI Coaches can’t wait to share their enthusiasm and expertise around bicycling.

“The LCI class in Milwaukee was a humbling experience!” shared Christy Hoff of Kenosha Racine Bike Club. “I mean that in a good way. With something like 50 years of bicycling under my belt, there was still a lot to learn. From bike handling (and I’ve ridden on the track and cyclocross) to rules of the road, this class helped me feel more confident. In addition, I feel better prepared to pass my love of cycling on to new friends and new generations.”

“Even though Red Bike & Green MKE does 30 – 40 community rides a year for the past 10 years,” notes Steven Hunter, “I definitely feel even more confident since taking the course. Knowing more about helping people stay on their bikes or even getting them moving has helped immediately on the next group ride I was on. I am usually the Caboose helping people during the rides anyway and am happy to have this extra knowledge on best practices for infrequent riders.”

“My LCI training experience was quite rich and had many great touchpoints,” noted Brian Gleichauf. “I was nicely challenged to think about not only my own cycling habits, but also how I could model and train others through my example on the bike and my teaching in the field and classroom.  It was superbly fun to learn with a diverse cohort and observe each person’s unique approach when we shared our teaching samples with each other.  I came away with a great skill set, awesome resources, the support of the League and the Bike Fed, and a bunch of new friends, united by a love of cycling and wanting to spread that love to others.”
