Let’s Get Outside!
The 2026 Wisconsin Healthy Communities Summit isn’t just about big ideas. It’s also about getting outside and experiencing the infrastructure and landscapes that make those ideas real. This year’s field trips offer unforgettable opportunities to explore the region on a mountain bike or a gravel bike.
Wausau is home to some of the Midwest’s premier trail systems. With professionally built singletrack winding through rolling forest, riders of all abilities can see firsthand how thoughtful design, partnerships, and stewardship create a destination that fuels local tourism and community pride. Potential rides in the dirt include guided trips to Nine Mile Forest, Rib Mountain, or Evergreen Bike Park.

Prefer drop bars and long views? Our gravel excursion highlights scenic rural routes surrounding Wausau and featured by IRONBULL in their annual gravel series. This route showcases low-traffic roads, varied terrain, and the economic impact of cycling events and adventure travel.

More of a hiker than a biker? We’ve got you covered. Between walking The Dells of the Eau Claire segment of the Ice Age Trail, or a walk along the Great Pinery Heritage Waterway, you can still see plenty of the previous day’s ideas put into practice and start thinking about what this looks like in your own community.
Whether you’re a planner, advocate, or elected official, these rides bring policy to life. They demonstrate how smart investments in outdoor recreation strengthen health, connectivity, and local economies. Bring your own bike, helmet, curiosity, and don’t forget your water! Field trip selection is now active, so you can choose your adventure while you register for the April 23-24 Summit!
*Please note that all outdoor field trips will have indoor contingency plans in the case of poor weather conditions.
