Before joining the Bike Fed staff, my clearest memory of Bike Week was the  coffee and bacon station for commuters on the Hank Aaron State Trail in Milwaukee.  Total bliss!  For many of us, this year’s “commuter station” is our own fridge – and not many of us are about to accept meat products from a stranger along a trail.

It is a year for re-thinking Bike Week.

According to the most recent research from Feeding America and  the USDA’s most recent report on food security in the U.S. food insecurity is on the rise due to the Coronavirus pandemic.  In 2020,  approximately 54 million people (1 in 6 people), including 18 million children (1 in 4 children, will experience food insecurity and not have adequate access to nutritious food to live a healthy life.  Moreover, the likelihood of food insecurity is even  higher for people of color.

It is a year for re-thinking Bike Week!  How can we, as cyclists, give back to our community and use our bikes to Pedal for Good?

This bike week, cyclists in  Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Appleton and Green Bay are encouraged to donate money to charities such as Feeding America. Or, better yet, consider donating non-perishable food items to a local food pantry BY BIKE! Madison is devoting a whole month to Pedaling for Good sponsored by Love to Ride – Cycle September (they are always a little extra).

People walk and ride bicycles on the Southwest Path in Madison, WI
The Southwest Path in Madison is always busy, so it is hard for people to socially distance.

Visit the Pedal for Good tab on the Wisconsin Bike Week site for more information on what to donate and video tips for transporting lots of food on your bike!  The home page will take you to more information for donation sites and activities in your part of the state.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and Pedal Forward Wisconsin!
